Visiting Aigues-Mortes with kids

Why a real castle keep and a self-paced wall walk work well for families, and what to plan for.

A tower kids can actually climb

The Tour de Constance has a spiral staircase and a terrace at the top, and the ramparts turn the circuit into something closer to an adventure than a museum visit — a real medieval wall to walk the whole way round, at whatever pace a family sets.

Spotting the salt pans and the Camargue

From the ramparts, children can pick out the salt pans of the Salins du Midi; a short drive into the Camargue brings the flamingos, bulls and white horses the region is known for.

Practical notes for families

The tower and ramparts involve historic stairs and uneven surfaces, so younger children need a hand near the edges and on the steps. Pushchairs can't go on the visit and are left at reception. Bring hats and water in summer, since most of the walk is in the open.

Making a family day of it

Because the visit is self-paced, a relaxed plan works well: the tower and ramparts in the cooler morning, lunch in the streets around Place Saint-Louis, then the Salins du Midi or the wider Camargue in the afternoon.
