Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons

Because the visit is self-paced, you can choose whichever season suits a long walk on exposed stone. April to June and September to October are usually warm without the full heat of midsummer, and spring and autumn are migration seasons for the Camargue's birds.

Summer heat on an open wall

July and August push temperatures up with little shade on the ramparts or the tower terrace. Visitors who come in high summer do better arriving early, before the midday heat and the day's busiest hours settle in.

Winter: quiet, shorter days

Winter brings the quietest crowds of the year, short but atmospheric days, and shorter opening hours. Whatever the season, last admission falls 45 minutes before closing.

Chasing the light

Late afternoon, in the last stretch before closing, low sun warms the pale stone to gold — a good window for photographs of the walls and the flat Camargue beyond them.
